Tried the wet burrito It was ok, but I'll order something else next time. It's a big burrito! The taco al pastor was pretty good as were the salsas for the tortilla chips. I love the green salsa - Made with jalapeños and tomatillos - it's got a kick. The red salsa is nice and fresh. The horchata was ok. Would definitely comeback for the salsas and to try the huaraches and more tacos.

Quiet place and friendly staff. We had the queso fundido and shared a wet burrito. Reasonably priced and well made food. The burrito had fresh ingredients including a little hint of pineapple which was a nice surprise. We would come by again if we were passing through.

The food and service is fantastic and the food is always ready fast. I've eaten here many times and am always satisfied. In my opinion it's the best Mexican food in Grand Rapids. Authentic and delicious!

Coming from New Mexico (and living there for 18 years), I have experienced a LOT of great Mexican food. This was not among that. I have yet to find a Mexican place that I really like in GR, but after reading all of the reviews and living close by, we decided to try this place. When we walked in, they were very friendly, and immediately took our drink orders, and asked if we would like chips and salsa. Salsa was good, and the horchata was some of the best that I've had in Grand Rapids. Unfortunately, that was where the good ended. We ordered our food (Tacos Dorados, Chiles Rellenos, and a side of guacamole). The guacamole was never brought to us, our drinks were never refilled (also got water), one order came differently than ordered, and the food really wasn't very good. The tacos were ordered without tomatoes and they were covered in tomatoes when they arrived. On top of that, the shredded beef was very tough and somewhat dry. The fried shells were very hard, as well. The chile rellenos were still a little tough, from not being cooked long enough, and were lacking in flavor as well. All in all, we will not be going back, and will continue our search for AUTHENTIC and tasty Mexican food in Grand Rapids.

Sometimes, life surprises you. You don't expect a movie like Pootietang to make you laugh so hard. You don't expect a heat wave on Thanksgiving. And you don't expect to find really good al pastor in Grand Rapids, Michigan. But at El Granjero, that's exactly what you get. Whether you choose a burrito, taco or torta as its vessel, the al pastor with its perfect spice and tenderness is a must try. A basket of chips costs you a dollar, but what you get is a warm, crispy basket of chips. Fifty cents more buts you a dish full of a fairly authentic hot salsa. I'm not sure I'd call it the most authentic Mexican restaurant, as you'll find Cuban and Hawaiian style dishes. But if you're in Grand Rapids and you want Mexican, go here for sure.

Homemade Mexican comfort food: delicious chicken burritos and quesadillas with plenty of tomatoes and avocado. The quality of the food puts the Mexican-American chains (Qd***, Ch*****) to shame. I've seen policemen waiting for take-out here, which, of course, is the true sign of a beloved local eatery. Their chips and salsas are extremely fresh and worth paying the extra buck or two charge. Rich horchata (almonds, rice, condensed milk: yum). Casual and bright, family-friendly setting.

Good food in a simple place. Not much decor but good selection of entrees that are well prepared.

It's the real deal, as authentic as it gets, type Mexican fare. The Horchata rocked my socks! If you're a fan, this Horchata will likely send you purring. The salsas that arrive with the complimentary chips are so fresh and so full of flavor. The salsa verde definitely has a bold kick, so be wary those who are spicy heat challenged. I personally loved it, but it's not for the wary. The guacamole was also very creamy and delicious. For the main course, I ordered the Pork Carnita Burrito. I liked the pork but it was a tad on the dry side. And to be warned, the carnita comes with chunks of pineapple. I liked it once I realized it was in there but the initial bite was a bit of a..."huh?!" moment. All around, great food and a very very generous portion as well. I wish I would've gone tacos, but the burrito was tasty none-the-less! I'd return for sure. Maybe next time I'm in the GR area. Till then, El Granjero!

Great and affordable food, probably the most authentic Mexican food in Grand Rapids. For those that want the more recognize able food they can stick with the wet burritos and quesadilla, where I would highly recommend the sopas and steak tacos.

Meat was mediocre quality. Not very authentic but standard Mexican fare for grand rapids

A big thanks to our Yelping brothers and sisters for helping us find this place. We always stop in GR on the way to or from our Torch Lake trip and try to find a good wet burrito while we're there. El Granjero did not disappoint. The wet burrito did not live up to my unrealistic childhood memories of Jerry's Roadhouse, but it was certainly better than Beltline. Fresh ingredients and plenty of them. The service was proficient... although we were a little confused about the paying procedure, but we just followed suit when we saw another couple head up to the register with no check. We'll be back unless we find new lead on Yelp next time we're in town.

The food here was delicious and the service was great! The waitress was very nice and answered the couple questions we had efficiently and nicely. I had the tamales plates with the chicken with green salsa filling. They were the best tamales I've had with a good ratio of masa to filling and a great flavor. My mother had the everyday special with a soft spicy pork taco and a ground beef tostada. She loved both and said the pork was 'super good.' The chips and salsa served when we sat down were also very yummy and the green salsa that was in a squeeze bottle was spicy and good, both salsas had a fresh flavor. The guacamole we ordered was very good with the right consistency and flavor. The people next to us got burritos and they were huge and looked amazing. I will most definitely be going back and taking all of my friends here!

Delicious! This is what I am looking for when it comes to authentic food. The dining area isn't important when the kitchen delivers the goods like El Granjero does! Not that the dining area is awful, but certainly could use a touch up. The authenticity of the food is what makes this place my new go-to Mexican food craving cure. I agree with TJ that you are a lucky diner if you get a hot chili relleno, but the rest of the menu is amazing too. Check it out, for sure.

My favorite is "The Everyday Special," which is 2 snacks served with beans and rice for $6.29. The two snacks that I prefer are guacamole and steak tacos on corn tortillas. The tortillas are chewy and delicate and they double them up on each taco. The guacamole is homemade and chunky. The steak strips would be little tough on their own but the guac and veggies make it a fantastic combination. And, of course, I can't order anything here without getting elote! If you aren't familiar with elote you need to go to El Granjero for that reason alone. Elote is corn on a stick smothered in lime and mayo, and then rolled in hot chili powder and a dry white cheese (similar to parmesan). You may have seen elote street vendors in Chicago if you've been there to visit. The vendors usually serve the corn in a cup, cut off the cob, with a fork and all the same seasonings. This is the only place I have found in Grand Rapids that makes it - and they do it well! This is an authentic (from what I can tell) feast for under $10. Best Mexican food in Grand Rapids and I'm a chef. The food is always fresh and authentic and the service is friendly and fantastic. My pic for always good and I've eaten there many many times. Salsa is out of this world fresh. Great atmosphere.

Totally awesome Mexican food. We are from out of town and probably would of never stopped due to the run down looking building. Huge portions...left stuffed with leftovers. Highly recommend trying out.

After living in Texas and Chicago, I have been to and had some fantastic mexican food over the years. As a former restaurant owner from the Chicago area, I have extremely high standards and expect a lot! I don't want to claim that this place was the best I've ever had, but in terms of authenticity, it's pretty darn good. It's probably about as close as you are going to find in Michigan. Ingredients were fresh and portions are large. I'll be back.

We started going to El Granjero while Little Mexico cafe was being rebuilt across the street, and now there's no going back! The steak fajitas are delicious. I always order them with a side of guacamole. Then we take home the leftovers and make steak and eggs for breakfast the next day. What a beautiful life. Wet burrito is also good- the sauces and salsas are all spicy and rich.
Best Mexican restaurant in Grand Rapids. Wish they (still) had a liquor license.

The BEST Mexican in the GR area. We read about it in the paper and had to try it. They use REAL cheese - unlike so many Mexican places that use a "cheese food" product. They have the special drinks and FANTASTIC tamales! Everything was so authentic and fresh. Service was excellent, too! We cannot wait to go back! Keep it up El Grandjero!!!

The staff is friendly and bilingual. The decor is colorful and non pretentious. This is everything you can ever imagine in an authentic Mexican restaurant. The nacho chips' portion is large for only a buck and the salsa is freshly homemade. I recommend the bell peppers stuffed with cheese. You won't find it anywhere else in GR area. and don't forget to ask for their fried up Jalapeno pepper and Green onions on the side..delicious!

Liked this place all of 2013 but then sanitation looked like it began to take a back seat last year. I hope they clean it up

It's difficult to describe our experience here. The atmosphere was certainly "no frills" as it has a generic Mexican restaurant feel from the early 90s. Also, it does not give the impression of an impeccably clean and tidy establishment. The service was fast and friendly enough. We ordered a spicy pork quesadilla which is marinated in pineapple juice. 'Twas fantastic! We also ordered a steak gordita which was rather tasteless... We also ordered a sampler of sorts with grilled queso fresco, onion, steak, chicken, chorizo, cactus, and jalapeño with an ancho chile sauce in the middle. You could assemble this in a tortilla. All the meats were fairly dry and bland. Bummer. Also, the cactus was pretty salty. The queso was nicely crunchy and flavorful, and the chile sauce made everything better! All things considered, I'm not entirely sure what to think, but I would lean towards a cautious recommendation of this place for lunch or a quick bite.

Great cactus salad!! I had been told that but didn't listen and ordered something else and regretted it. The shrimp tostada was really really scant on shrimp but was otherwise huge and covered with great beans, really good sauce, etc. The negatives: The chips and salsa aren't free which is a bummer and they were really understaffed. They don't serve alcohol. The chicarones on a tostada my daughter got were slimy rather than crispy. Sounds like a lot of complaints but the freshness, size and deliciousness of the seasonings (+ a Groupon) made it a pretty great place.

I see a lot of people here say this is "authentic Mexican food". As I'm not Mexican, I can't really vouch for that, but what I can say is this is possibly the most delicious Mexican food I've ever had. Also, it looks like everyone working here (and most of the people eating here) are Mexican which is always a good sign. I started out with chips and salsa which were perfect. Very simple (didn't look like much more than tomatoes, onions, jalapeno, cilantro, and lime) which is exactly how I like it. This was already a pretty tasty start. I ordered one of their wet burritos with barbacoa (shredded meat) inside. This thing was jam packed with flavor. The red sauce that my burrito was smothered in was so good I made every effort to sop up every day last drop. This burrito was also bursting with meat - they don't skimp on ingredients here. I'd also like to mention that under normal circumstances I probably could've only eaten half of it - this burrito was about the size of my head. If you're eating with a couple people 2 of these burritos could probably feed 3 very hungry people. For the burrito, the chips and salsa, and a side of rice, I only spent about $15 with tax and tip. Excellent value for an incredible meal.

First off had to pay for the chips and salsa that wasn't remotely spicy. My two friends got coffee , only refilled one of their cups and had to bring it to the back to fill it rather than bringing the pot to the table. & Same with my water . My Friends got a la carte stuff , which was served to them before I even got my entree about 15 minutes later. They were pretty much done eating when I got my cold ass cheese relleno . With 1 baby slice of avo and a tad of sour cream. Also we had three different waitresses, which we saw each of them once. Way terrible experience I was very upset in the end I had to pay $11 .... For bullshit. In the wise words of fleetwood Mac : Never going back again.

The service was very friendly and helpful. The atmosphere was quaint and comfortable. There was not a lit sign outside or on the building so it made it difficult to find it in the dark. The food was awesome. They brought chips and salsa to the table when we arrived and the food we ordered came very promptly. I had the carnita quesedilla and it was stellar. The pork was so tender and delicious! I will be stopping in again when im in the area.

I decided to give this place another try. I ordered the enchilada meal with mole sauce. The service was great this time and the food was really good. The refried beans are really tasty and I like that they have so many sauce options for the enchiladas. The food tastes fresh and I was very pleased with how it looked on the plate and loved all of the flavors. I'm glad I decided to try this place out again.

Excellent. May be the best in Grand Rapids, which is admittedly not saying much. The chili relleno had an actual fresh chili with actual flavor. Chicken tamales were very tasty. Chips were fine. Salsa seemed pretty fresh--with cilantro you could taste. It's not fine dining but it's clean and friendly and inexpensive.

The food was very good. I had a wet burrito and Maria had tongue with mole, rice and beans. Based on the food alone I'd give them at least 4 stars. But service was not good. Our waiter was very young and he had trouble understanding our order. We tried communicating in both English and Spanish (Maria's first language). He never checked on us and we had to ask a different server for water refills. Maybe he was new so we'll be back because of the food.

I love Mexican food so much, and the food here was okay, but the service was just... so terrible. We went around 3 pm and basically no one was in the restaurant except us. Our waitress brought us water and we were sad to discover they charge for chips and salsa :/ We got guacamole which was pretty bland. We put our order in and literally got our food a half hour later-- I have no idea what they could have been doing that whole time. Let's be honest, it's not that complicated to make a taco. When we went up to the counter it literally took 10 minutes for the waitress to check us out. She kept running off and helping another customer while we waited to be able to leave. Anyway, maybe they were just having an off day and maybe it's cause we were in a hurry by the end, but I would never go back here or recommend it.

Stopped in for an early dinner/late lunch with empty belly's and big eyes for everything on the expansive menu. I ordered pineapple Jarritos - my fav flavor - and we got a basket of chips and salsa for the table. I had a terrible time choosing my meal but I ultimately decided on the vegetarian wet burrito. Chips came and the salsa was DY-NO-MITE! Super tasty chucks of tomato and visible cilantro that everyone at the table ate it, even my daughter, who isn't inclined towards spice or heat at all. With our salsa also came the feared, unlabeled, plastic, squeeze bottle of green sauce! Watch out- that one was indeed hot- at least for me. Of course my husband squirted it all over his chips and meal saying it added a "nice little kick", like it was nothing. You be the judge. My wet burrito came out before the other food. I feel like food, even at mom and pop places, should all come out at once to the table so no one feel awkward eating in front of everyone else. However, the rest of the food came out relatively quickly so it was OK. I picked the wet burrito because being at a new place I figured i would stick to a can't-mess- it-up, go-to entree for my first experience. It was good but nothing major. Typical lettuce, tomato, sour cream and bean in a flour tortilla. the red sauce was tasty but standard Mexican fare. Everyone else said about the same things about their meals - good but nothing wow'ing or otherwise unique. I wouldn't say it's the best in Grand Rapids, but this unpretentious family restaurant makes comfortable, home-style Mexican food at a decent price.

I am from Chicago and have the pleasure of many really good Mexican restaurants in close proximity. The tacos are good and the dry burritos are where its at. The food is very good in my opinion, nothing out of this world or to rant and rave about, but if your looking for above average Mexican food, this place is worth a shot.

I was recently informed that they've stopped using lard in the beans and other dishes. They also offer a good variety of vegetarian dishes that can easily be made vegan. This is incredibly rare with real authentic mexican food. I've loved this restaurant for near a decade, they've always served great food with awesome service!

Thank you Yelp for a great recommendation! I was in town for the day and needed a quick lunch.... Mmmmmm El Granjero was a good as all my fellow Yelpers said it was! The steak burrito was huge and delish! I ordered it wet with some spice. The beef was well seasoned, and all the ingredients were very fresh. It's true the chips are not free but really a buck fifty for chips, yummy fresh salsa, and some hot fresh salsa? My whole bill was $13 and some change so just deal with it! I would definitely go back!

Nice little laid back Mexican restaurant. The food was good and fairly priced, but nothing exceptional. The inside is relatively clean and bright, but nothing special. This wouldn't be the place for a romantic meal, but is great for a low key lunch or dinner. It was relatively kid friendly and had a decent and reasonably priced kids menu. The menu had some unique dishes including multiple dishes using cactus. Everything was fresh and well made and tasted good. Surprisingly the chips for the chips and salsa were cold and not very good. I think they just opened a bag of something. There's nothing wrong with it, but I was a little disappointed they were cold. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. Pretty good place. I'll likely be back, but I wouldn't consider it a destination.

A decent Mexican restaurant. Nowhere near the best, but decent. Food is fair - not great, prices are not unreasonable, service is slow/inconsistent and there is no alcohol available. Still, it beats the heck out of fast food Mexican. We went with a group of 6 for an early Saturday dinner. We easily got a table, but the small place filled up quickly. Our server was pleasant enough, but in no rush to get us our beverages or take our orders. The chips were good and the accompanying salsa was fresh. The tables were stocked with an unlabeled salsa verde which was medium-hot and tasty. (This stuff ended up saving most of my dinner as I slathered it on generously when necessary.) My wife got the Alambre, which is a combination plate of steak, chicken and pork. She said it was pretty good and, as usual, left half of it - which I ate. It was decent, but bland. I got the tlacoyos, which is essentially a bean and cactus salad. More bland than the cactus salad I've had before and I wouldn't recommend it. I also had 4 different a la carte tacos with soft corn shells: ground beef, Mexican sausage, beef tongue and tripe. The ground beef was meh, the beef tongue was tender and not as tasty as I had hoped, but the Mexican sausage was the star of the show. I wish I had just gotten 4 of those. For those of you who don't know what tripe is, it's beef stomach or intestine. Good tripe is really wonderful. Bad tripe is like chewing on an old rubber hose that you know full well was once animal intestine. I typically eat like a Mako shark, but my mouth would not allow me to swallow the second bite of this taco. Definitely not an example of good tripe. We waited around after finishing our meal and then had to go up and wait in line at the register to cash out as our waitress had disappeared. There are far better places for Mexican in GR, but this place clearly has its strengths.

I really wanted to like this place, and based on all the reviews, I'm really disappointed. The salsa is good, and that's about all. The food is really mediocre. My husband wanted the wet burrito meal, but his order was wrong. He just got the wet burrito. The steak inside of it had no flavor. It was just overall not good. I got the chicken tostada, and the chicken was cold and in strips. I thought it would be shredded. The fresh avocado on top was the best part. Also, the food overall was lukewarm. They also use Cisco chips. There are way better places for Mexican around Grand Rapids.

This place earns a big "meh" from me. This is a very generic Mexican restaurant with nothing really to note. Tacos were bland and shells we're mostly raw. Burrito had not much flavor. If you're in the neighborhood craving some Mexican this isn't a bad choice, but if you're seeking out some real good food, there are plenty of better options in GR

Was in the area and tried this place because the Yelp reviews. My wife and I were very pleased with this restaurant. We both had the wet burrito diners, less than $9 each, she had the chicken, I had the hamburger. Both diners were very tasty and authentic. If you like Mexican food this restaurant would be a good choice. I knocked off one star because the service was just ok. We had to ask for almost everything...more water, silverware, extra chips and salsa. Even though the service was just ok, the waitress was very friendly.

the chips and salsa are great. they always give them to us when we order, so i'm guessing they're included. as some others have said, the menu is huge, the resturaunt is spacious and good for dining in, but it's just nothing special. i got a shrimp taco and it was probably one of the worst i've ever had. the gourdita is nothing like the one San Jose makes. it's okay, but not at all what i want my gourdita to be like. the tacos are so boring i've entirely forgotten them. the same goes for the hot sauce, just boring. this is not the worst mexican food i've had in GR, but it's not the best. we find ourselves here when everywhere else is closed. not super authentic, it's a bit more americanized than some other mexican food places in town. update: I dont know if they've changed their veggie taco, but it was a lot better this time! actually it appeared as if they made their own refried beans with black beans. no one else that i know of in GR does this, so that's really a huge bonus! the reason I'm giving them a whole star more now is because of the shrimp torta. I was a little worried it wouldnt go well considering I didn't really like the shrimp taco, but it was REALLY good!! like, really really good. I don't eat any other meat besides fish and am pretty much a vegetarian otherwise, so mexican food can get boring for me. this torta was really very interesting and different and delicious! i'm going to go back soon just for the torta! so good!!

By far the best Mexican restaurant in town. Many people rave about some dive on 28th st., but this beats any other place by far. Its not fire hot, but tasty good. Try the drink that tastes like a milk shake. Best +++ is that the workers are fluent in English and greet and acknowledge in English.

I love authentic Mexican food and frequent many taquerias in the Chicago area (little village, Pilsen, west side). Unfortunately, there are very few Mexican places in GR that are similar to those in Chicago. El Granjero is absolutely the best dine in Mexican in town. (The best taqueria stand in town is Taqueria San Jose on Division) I take friends from Chicago and DC here when they visit. All are surprised at the quality. The owners are from Mexico City - La Ciudad; so try some of the specialties from that area. The specials in general are a good choice. As for the basics, expect terrific Tacos Mexicanos with cilantro and onions. The steak or chorizo are best. The barbacoa seems off to me. The have three salsas: mild red, spicy red, tomatillo and poco de gallo on request. guacamole is a standout. Service is friendly, prices are reasonable. While they have jaritos and other bottled drinks, they have no alcohol. I agree that a Mexican beer or margarita would be nice to have here. I wish the state of MI would wake up and allow more BYOB, it would be perfect here.

I'm kinda in love with this place and I'd go every day if I could. I originally went here because I wanted Mexican food, but I wanted to take it home and the idea of getting Taco Bell or Adobe made my stomach flip. I tried the barbacoa tacos, chicken sopas, and chicken tostadas and was completely satisfied. It was so good that I made my sister go with me the next day and I had the fajitas, which were also superb. Their burritos are also excellent and writing this review is making me intensely crave their food.

what mexican restaurant charges you for chips and cheap salsa? this one. most restaurants of its kind automatically bring you some. never mind that. i ordered a wet steak burrito. the meat to lettuce ratio was insane. the thing was loaded with head lettuce - the cheapest kind - and there was just barely any meat inside the burrito itself. they don't serve beans and rice on the side, either. felt a bit ripped off here. and left hungry.

We were staying at the Holiday Inn Express and when we arrived were very hungry after a 3 hour drive from Chicago. We Yelp'd food nearby and found this little place. As we arrived, we were kind of skeptical due to the location and size of the restaurant. However, this place really proves that you cannot judge a book by it's cover. The menu options are enough to please anyone's diet, palate, and tastes. We ordered the Molcajete de carne which was absolutely satisfying and delicious. It came with carne asada, chicken, chorizo, nopales, cheese, cebollitas, a side of beans, and a side plate of radishes, grilled onions and limes. It came with an order of tortillas, but for a party of two, we needed another order (5 per order). The Horchata was something I never tasted before and I've had a lot of horchata. It tasted like it had a hint of caramel or butterscotch, very good! The shrimp taco and fish taco we ordered for our son was ok, he seemed to like it. It was a Friday evening and was very busy, but the food came out incredibly fast! I was very happy with the overall experience and if we ever visit Michigan again, I will def. want to stop by here again! Also, the home made flan was good. Overall, it was authentic to Mexican food, great price for the amount of food they serve, great service and very clean.

Not to brag, but I know a lot about authentic Mexican food. I've spent as many as 12 hours on out-of-the-way destinations like la isla de Cozumel; I've eaten at some of the finest Mexican restaurants in the world, including On the Border, Chili's, and the Beltline Bar; and I can identify any of six national nacho cheese brands while blindfolded. No, I obviously wouldn't know authentic Mexican food if it shouted "ay caramba" and kicked me en los pelotas. However, I do know good food and bad food. The food at El Granjero is decidedly good, with some items approaching glorious. First, discard anything you think you know about salsa, particularly those which you have purchased from the aisles of a supermarket. In fact, no longer refer to such abominations as salsa, but rather as jarred tomato and onion product. Now that those foul memories are purged, you are free to enter the halls of El Granjero (which means The Farmer. I asked the Google) and taste salsa for the first time. After doing so, if you don't want to bury your face in the bowl and start to slurp as fast as you can, then...well, you're probably a well-functioning member of society. But my point is that the stuff is amazing and should be put on everything you eat for the rest of your life. I loved the salsa verde as well. Not quite as exciting as its red cousin, as per usual for the green variety, but delicious with a kick nonetheless. You wimpy types may find it too hot for your liking. You're dead to me. I don't want to get in a rut here, but I have to mention a third dip/condiment: the guacamole. This guacamole happens to be the best guacamole in the world, which I know because I have personally tried every guacamole in the world. Seriously, if I had their guacamole recipe I would buy a pallet of avocados and a body bag full of tortilla chips, then eat guacamole until it killed me. (See what I did there? There's already a body bag for my guacamole-engorged corpse.) I sampled many items, none of which was bad. Particularly delicious were the shrimp quesadilla, chorizo quesadilla, refried beans, and stuffed pepper. Regularly delicious were the steak taco, beef taquito, and pork tamale. And only mildly delicious was the cheese enchilada. Only one thing: the Choco Taco that's on the menu? Same Choco Taco that's in gas station freezers. Now, I love Choco Tacos and will never think less of any establishment for offering them, but they kind of run contrary to the whole "authentic" vibe. However, it's not like the menu fakes you out with a name like "El Taco de Chocolate" or something; it is blunt and it is accurate: "Choco Taco. $1.99." You don't like it, step off, Ace of Cakes.

Everything I've gotten here has been delicious and authentic. There menu says they are going to sell fruit water during the summertime, so I can't wait to try that. Bonus: they have Choco Tacos.

Tamales. They may not be on the menu, but they are delicious. They are open Sundays, and the service is efficient, the food is good, and the menu is interesting. It's much more American than a few other places listed (e.g. Taqueria San Jose), but it's also a little more upscale (if you can compare it to that). The lemonade is to DIE for - get it. Burritos are huge, chips are plentiful, guac is good. Bonus: It's open on Sundays.

Great salsa with tasty cilantro flavor, there are no free chips or refills but they were a good appetizer. I had the El Molcajete - steak, chicken breast, grilled CACTUS, Mexican sausage, and grilled Mexican white cheese. This was my first experience with Cactus and I have to say, it was a good one. I did not have any needles left in my mouth and the lime that was recommended to go over it was great. This was the most unique Mexican meal I have ever had, and I've been to a lot of Mexican restaurants. This place is authentic, has decent service, and a good atmosphere. The prices are very reasonable which would make this my go to spot if I lived in the area. The only downside was that they were out of burrito tortillas...really?!?!? I'm pretty sure a Mexican place should have enough of those on hand to pass them out as frisbees to little kids. Highly Recommend.

Just went to El Granjero for the second time last night. The food was great, and was fresh. Everything tasted authentic, and the prices were good. They have some unique menu items too. It sure beats other more Tex-Mex restaurants. The service took a little longer than expected, but it was worth the wait when the food came. The salsa was delicious, definitely fresh made not from a bottle. The guacamole was also very good. I ordered the Mexican Platter, which came with a chile relleno, steak taco, pork tamale, enchilada, rices and beans. Everything was very good, and I plan on going there again.

The others reviewers are right on. The best authentic Mex joint in GR. Its refreshing to be served a nice bowl of fresh salsa as well as a green chili bowl that brings some heat. I had the spiced pork wet burrito. It was great with the right amount of meat and fresh lettuce and big chunks of avocado were a pleasant surprise. I look forward to visiting next week.

Don't be fooled by the exterior- this is one the best, most authentic Mexican food restaurants in the country. Go in and order several things- it's soo affordable, why not? Leave with a big doggie bag to enjoy later!

This place is truly authentic- you feel like your walking into a little place south of the border.. Super taco salad! Great big burritos

Amazing Mexican food. Little Mexico has nothing over this place. We're big fans.

If you're looking for the real deal this is it! No fast food with little pkts of sauce here! Salsa is good with just the right amount of heat Every menu item we have tried we loved. Portion sizes are decent but not over the top! Take the time to read over the menu and don't be afraid to try something new and different! Just a head's up no liquor so enjoy a huaracha (I know I didn't spell it correctly but it's the rice milk type drink-YUM!)

I come from a home town that had Mexican food on every corner, from delicious little holes in the wall to Taco Vans (The grandfather of the modern food truck) and I have been on a 13 year hunt for something close to my childhood memories. I can't say El Granjero is 100% there, it's still a little too American for my taste... but it's pretty close. Traditional Barbacoa or Adobada on soft corn tortillas. I have to special order them with cilantro, chopped onion, salsa verde and lime. It's VERY hard to find an American Mexican restaurant that doesn't hide their tacos under a mountain of chopped salad. The meat was flavorful and tender. They have some of the best Sopes in town, the corn shell wasn't tough at all. The chili relleno was good, a nice fluffy egg batter. I would prefer mine without seeds because Pablano seeds can be tough and hard to chew throug, but I haven't found a place in town that scrapes the seeds out. The wait staff is friendly, there are some slips in the attentiveness, it can sometimes take a while to get a refill or remove the empty plates. All in all I enjoyed the food and atmosphere and plan on returning often.

A group of six of us visited on a recent weekday evening. The service was fast and friendly, and the food was quite authentic compared to other Mexican restaurants I've visited in Grand Rapids. I ordered the dry vegetarian burrito, and it was very tasty. The "hot" sauce for the chips was tasty and actually had a bit of a bite. The regular salsa was good too. Everyone in the group enjoyed their food, though the fajitas weren't what my BIL expected. The meat was sort of grilled rather than sizzling.

I stopped here while passing through on a roadtrip and decided to branch out on my menu choice given the perceived authenticity of this place. I ordered the ham and cactus which was ok, although I'll admit I probably should have ordered something more mainstream. My friends really enjoyed their meals, especially the tamales. Service was friendly. I would recommend stopping here if you're in the area.

yeah, you Wanna GO Here. My wife and i tried lots of different menu items and all of them were Home runs! Everything is home made including their soft taco shells. The Guacamole was so good i asked for more. The building looks like an old Lee's Famous Recipe so that's kind of a nice thing for me cause sometimes when i go into ethnic restaurants i feel uncomfortable with unfamiliar surroundings. Don't forget to leave room for some of their delicious homemade Flan. Yum!

A buddy who lived in San Diego turned me on to this place. Not much to look at but the food is authentic and damn good!

I worked on Bridge Street when I was in high school, and have been fortunate enough to watch El Granjero open (initially as Tacos El Ganadero), grow, and ultimately flourish as one of the best restaurants in the city. It's hard to believe when you walk into the sunny, open, colorful dining room that this place used to look like a dump. However, the food has been consistently excellent since the day it opened, and the owners have proven they're in it for the long haul by consistently investing and improving upon the property over the past decade. Chile rellenos are easily the best I've had anywhere, including Mexico, and their tacos are my favorite iteration of my favorite food. Burritos may not be authentic but they are superb. Be sure to try all of the meats they offer - tripe, tongue, spicy pork, al pastor, and my absolute, last supper favorite - the barbacoa - are even more fantastic than their (awesomely done) standards of steak, chicken, etc. Also make sure to ask for the complimentary grilled vegetables, a refreshing appetizers of grilled spring onions and green chilis mixed with grilled lime slices. I recommend that any first time diners try the mexican plate - a roughly $8 sampler with a taco, enchilada, relleno, tamale, and rice and beans. Granjero also serves the freshest tasting food I've had anywhere in Grand Rapids. Without ramming it down your throat like some places do these days, it is apparent that they take great care in selecting their produce - salsas are obviously made with fresh, not canned ingredients (go there when the tomatoes are at peak in august and september and the red salsa is more addicting than crack) and are switched up frequently, though you will always have a roja and a verde, both of which should be used liberally until your cheeks are dripping beads of sweat and you're gulping down glass-after-glass of their awesome horchata. I also want to give them a special shout out for having the best avocadoes anywhere. I could eat them plain with a spoon, but guacamole is even better. I'd love to know where they get these from. They offer menudo and seafood soups on the weekends, which are wonderful hangover cures and can go quickly. Other things you must try on the menu: spare ribs, tamales, shrimp quesadilla, the molcajete, everything on the breakfast menu....I give up - everything here is good, and it tastes the same time everytime you go; unlike any other restaurant i've been to, they never had an off day. My former company also used them for catering several times and I will say they also are one of the best, most reasonably-priced caterers in the area. Granjero is truly a crowd pleaser, as the food will delight both discriminating pursuers of authentic ethnic food and those whose idea of Mexican dining is a cheesy gordita crunch. There are always lots of families in there and they do have an expansive kids menu. I have eaten here hundreds of times and never had a bad meal, or even one that is average. Granjero is consistently excellent and more than deserving of a 5-star rating.

Was a fan of Maggies until I found this gem. Great sopes and gorditas. Have the barbacoa it is outta control tasty! I had it in a burrito and I am still dreaming about it. 10% discount for university faculty and students. Most definitely my favorite taqueria in Gr currently.

If you are looking for real "authentic" Mexican food in GR, El Granjero is a solid option located on the lower west side. The grilled chicken soft tacos had a good flavor, but that flavor was somewhat offset by the lettuce, which tasted as if it had been sitting in an open fridge for too long. Stated simply, the lettuce was not fresh. Nevertheless, I would return to sample their other offerings and I would agree that El Granjero is a good option for authentic Mexican food in GR.

I might as well be back in LA! Great salsa and fantastic burritos. Get there early if you want to go there for lunch. The place fills up fast.

This is some of the best Mexican food I've ever had, not that I'm some connoisseur but out of all of the places I've tried in GR I think this ranks very high, if not at the top. Sometimes wet burritos from more authentic places miss the mark for me but the one I got here was awesome and I got ground beef which is my least favorite meat. Hard and soft tacos were good as well. I wish I could eat here every day! And it can get crowded but I never felt like seating was tight. Parking can be though, around lunch time. The person manning the register that might have been the manager was very friendly, accommodating and had a good memory of what everyone had ordered which showed she was really on top of her customer's food and making sure everyone was happy.

I hadn't visited Grand Rapids in quite a while so glad there's more Mexican restaurants since I was around. While in town I asked my friends to take me to a good Mexican restaurant and they took me here. Very enjoyable, pretty authentic w some tailoring for gringos on some stuff. I was well satisfied. Get an order of the plate of roasted green onion and jalapeno. Superb.

El Granjero had good tortillas and tacos but the salsa was average and the place was freezing when we were there during the winter.

I kid you not, you can't go wrong here. But I particularly love love their chile rellanos. Omg, the bomb!!! With a side order of the grilled green onions and jalapeño peppers, fresh radish and limes. When the last time I visited gr (I live in portland), I stopped by twice because I couldn't get enough. A little diners serving amazing homey grubs deserve so much more respect within the food scene. Kudos!! And thank you for your amazing food and service!

I had a torta which was pretty good but I was disappointed in the chille rellenos. While it is more authentic than most Mexican restaurants I've been to in GR, the food I had was good but I was far from impressed. I'm sure I'll give it another shot sometime in the future, but not anytime soon.

Absolutely great Mexican food. Service was great as well. If you like spicy than get your wet burrito with the Hot sauce, it was amazing!!! I will definitely be back again soon.

This humble little place was seriously bustling when we arrived - and for good reason! The food was awesome and super cheap. :) We ordered three meals with three sides of elote as well as 8 tamales, another order of elote, and 2 pieces of flan to go, all for under $40! That was a nice surprise. My veggie wet burrito was tasty and my coworkers both ordered the Flautas at the recommendation of our super nice server. They came with thick slices of avocado on top and sides of rice and beans - I think these are one of the stars of the menu for sure. I would highly recommend the elote, which comes en vaso, too! My only beef (ha) is that they need more vegetarian options. I will absolutely be back to this place!

While this place was good, I don't think it was worth 4.5 stars! It is good, authentic Mexican food, however, go to nearly any Mexican restaurant out west and it will be better. Further more, most dishes are 10-14$, which is WAYY too expensive for Mexican food in a not fancy restaurant. They don't even give free chips and salsa. Really?

I have no idea why this place is so highly reviewed. Yes, this is authentic in the sense that most of the staff is hispanic, but that's about as far as it goes. Let's set aside the fact that the largest section on the menu is titled "America's Favorite Mexican Dishes" (screams authentic right?) the food is terrible. Cold (store bought?) chips, salsa without any flavor depth other than "hot", literally unseasoned meat, and flavorless beans and rice. Not to mention the service was slow and unattentive. I watched as a table sat for 10 minutes before anyone greeted them, our drinks were never refilled, and the table next to us sent food back because there was a hair in it. When we went up to pay at the counter I saw the cook using his ungloved hands to plate food. All of this combined with the fact that you can get outstanding Mexican food literally across the street for half the price at Tacos el Cunado or up the street about a mile at Maggie's Kitchen. Avoid this place entirely.

The service was great, helpful and prompt. The food was good, I wouldn't say extraordinary but it was hot (temp) and tasty. I'd give it more stars if the interior was cleaner.

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

Best Mexican food in town. I do not lie. Flautas Amazing! Torta's are phenom! Service is great. friendly staff who take very good care of you. Guacamole is best you can find. made fresh to order, Avocados are always the best tasting always fresh. Did I say Tacos Tacos TAcos you can't go wrong with anything on the menu
(5)Samantha G.

(2)Joey J.
(4)Becky C.
(4)Scott S.
Good food in a simple place. Not much decor but good selection of entrees that are well prepared.
(5)Kristin G.
(4)Todd L.
Great and affordable food, probably the most authentic Mexican food in Grand Rapids. For those that want the more recognize able food they can stick with the wet burritos and quesadilla, where I would highly recommend the sopas and steak tacos.
(4)Wendy S.
Meat was mediocre quality. Not very authentic but standard Mexican fare for grand rapids
(3)Shain C.
(4)Meredith E.
(5)Raeann J.
I absolutely love this place, it's REAL authentic Mexican food, I've ordered several different items from off their menu and I was never disappointed, the food is fresh and DELICIOUS! A must try!
(5)Maureen G.
Fabulous food, service and overall experience. If you like Mexican food go here!
(5)John F.
(4)Mackenna M.
View my whole review on my blog: eatinggrandrapids.com/20…

Best Mexican food in Grand Rapids and I'm a chef. The food is always fresh and authentic and the service is friendly and fantastic. My pic for always good and I've eaten there many many times. Salsa is out of this world fresh. Great atmosphere.
(5)Cecilia I.
My favorite Mexican restaurant in not only Grand Rapids, but also all of michigan. Their quesadillas are absolutely the best.
(5)A S.
Service left a lot to be desired. Food wasn't exceptional. Wouldn't go back. There has to be better Mexican food in GR.
(2)Anne T.
Totally awesome Mexican food. We are from out of town and probably would of never stopped due to the run down looking building. Huge portions...left stuffed with leftovers. Highly recommend trying out.
(5)Brian L.
(4)Carolyn S.
(5)TJ C.
If a restaurant labels itself 'authentic Mexican cuisine,' chances are their investment was in a décor of dumb mini souvenir sombreros and a mariachi album looping in the background. The only thing that will ultimately stink worse than the food is your resulting gassers. I prefer establishments like El Granjero. The dining room is simple; brightly colored with the aroma of Mexican food wafting out of the adjacent kitchen. Everything I have eaten here is wonderful. The wet burritos are amazing, especially if you need a boost for the next 'Biggest Loser' audition. I highly recommend the stuffed peppers. If you get a spicy one you're in for a treat. Give it a shot. If you prefer the bland, 5 ingredient 'authentic' experience of Chi Chi's, drive yourself into the river and stop wasting flavorful food for the rest of us.
(5)Rob K.
Best Mexican restaurant in Grand Rapids. Wish they (still) had a liquor license.
(5)Bob F.
Best Mexican food that I have had in Grand Rapids. It is nice because it is less than a mile from my house.
(5)Anne B.
(5)Kimchi J.
(5)Mike S.
Liked this place all of 2013 but then sanitation looked like it began to take a back seat last year. I hope they clean it up
(1)Sarine J.
(3)Cathy H.
(4)Leilani D.

Delicious. Simply delicious. Not your "donks" aka Taco Boy kind of place. Their Bistek a la mexicana in tomato sauce is the bomb. They are good.

Nice place , nice food . Burreto dinner time
(5)Angela B.

(4)Gretchen D.
(4)Anna A.
Granjero is good again. Love this place. Love the grilled onions and radishes. We are back!
(5)Tom V.

(3)Frank B.
(4)El P.
I was recently informed that they've stopped using lard in the beans and other dishes. They also offer a good variety of vegetarian dishes that can easily be made vegan. This is incredibly rare with real authentic mexican food. I've loved this restaurant for near a decade, they've always served great food with awesome service!
(5)Mitchell H.
Yo it's pretty dope. 10 out of 10 would eat here again. Service, pretty dope. Price, pretty dope. Quesadillas also pretty dope. All in all, pretty dope.
(5)Darcy W.
(4)Aaron H.

(3)Emily S.
(2)Kevin P.
(3)B M.
(4)Anna P.
the chips and salsa are great. they always give them to us when we order, so i'm guessing they're included. as some others have said, the menu is huge, the resturaunt is spacious and good for dining in, but it's just nothing special. i got a shrimp taco and it was probably one of the worst i've ever had. the gourdita is nothing like the one San Jose makes. it's okay, but not at all what i want my gourdita to be like. the tacos are so boring i've entirely forgotten them. the same goes for the hot sauce, just boring. this is not the worst mexican food i've had in GR, but it's not the best. we find ourselves here when everywhere else is closed. not super authentic, it's a bit more americanized than some other mexican food places in town. update: I dont know if they've changed their veggie taco, but it was a lot better this time! actually it appeared as if they made their own refried beans with black beans. no one else that i know of in GR does this, so that's really a huge bonus! the reason I'm giving them a whole star more now is because of the shrimp torta. I was a little worried it wouldnt go well considering I didn't really like the shrimp taco, but it was REALLY good!! like, really really good. I don't eat any other meat besides fish and am pretty much a vegetarian otherwise, so mexican food can get boring for me. this torta was really very interesting and different and delicious! i'm going to go back soon just for the torta! so good!!
(4)Nicole G.
Best Mexican in town! I've had real authentic, living in a Hispanic neighborhood in Chicago and going to Mexico and this place is right up there!! I just wish they had alcohol or BYOB..
(5)Ryan U.
Best Tacos in Town!!!! Small shop on the West side of Grand Rapids. Don't let the building or the cow on the sign fool you. Great Mexican food!
(5)William K.
By far the best Mexican restaurant in town. Many people rave about some dive on 28th st., but this beats any other place by far. Its not fire hot, but tasty good. Try the drink that tastes like a milk shake. Best +++ is that the workers are fluent in English and greet and acknowledge in English.
(5)Paolo H.
(5)Laura P.
(5)Dave D.
Place was packed at 8PM. Thats always a good sign. Food and service was great.
(4)Kendal P.
what mexican restaurant charges you for chips and cheap salsa? this one. most restaurants of its kind automatically bring you some. never mind that. i ordered a wet steak burrito. the meat to lettuce ratio was insane. the thing was loaded with head lettuce - the cheapest kind - and there was just barely any meat inside the burrito itself. they don't serve beans and rice on the side, either. felt a bit ripped off here. and left hungry.
(2)Abe B.
Authentic Mexican food. The molcajete meat version fed 2 ppl for 14. Good deal
(5)Angelica S.

Fantastic quesadillas. Nice homey small-town feel, great quality food.

(5)Maggi O.
Everything I've gotten here has been delicious and authentic. There menu says they are going to sell fruit water during the summertime, so I can't wait to try that. Bonus: they have Choco Tacos.
(5)Jodi W.
(5)Darin A.
(5)Shaun H.
(5)Joel H.
(5)Frank W.
Don't be fooled by the exterior- this is one the best, most authentic Mexican food restaurants in the country. Go in and order several things- it's soo affordable, why not? Leave with a big doggie bag to enjoy later!
(5)Andrea T.
This place is truly authentic- you feel like your walking into a little place south of the border.. Super taco salad! Great big burritos
(4)Keith C.
Shady building? Yes. Amazing authentic food? Yes.
(5)Juan G.
Amazing Mexican food. Little Mexico has nothing over this place. We're big fans.
(5)Amy B.
(5)Michelle B.

(4)Amanda C.
(4)Den M.
Best Mexican food I've found and excellent prices
(5)Tim D.
yeah, you Wanna GO Here. Yum!
(5)Matt T.

(5)Jack L.
Was a fan of Maggies until I found this gem. Great sopes and gorditas. Have the barbacoa it is outta control tasty! I had it in a burrito and I am still dreaming about it. 10% discount for university faculty and students. Most definitely my favorite taqueria in Gr currently.
(4)Toby K.
(3)Dan S.
I might as well be back in LA! Great salsa and fantastic burritos. Get there early if you want to go there for lunch. The place fills up fast.
(5)Deelilah J.
(5)Jeremy H.
This is the best Mexican restaurant in GR. The food is authentic and the price is right. My favorite is the tamales.
(5)Julian B.
Superb.
(4)Jason D.
El Granjero had good tortillas and tacos but the salsa was average and the place was freezing when we were there during the winter.
(2)Bec B.
(5)Evan S.
I had a torta which was pretty good but I was disappointed in the chille rellenos. While it is more authentic than most Mexican restaurants I've been to in GR, the food I had was good but I was far from impressed. I'm sure I'll give it another shot sometime in the future, but not anytime soon.
(3)Jeffrey S.
Absolutely great Mexican food. Service was great as well. If you like spicy than get your wet burrito with the Hot sauce, it was amazing!!! I will definitely be back again soon.
(5)Sara C.
(4)This I.
